Cancer & Blood Disorders

New treatments enable more children to survive cancer than ever before. Cure rates vary according to the type of cancer, but according to the Children's Oncology Group, childhood cancer survival rates have improved since the 1950s from less than 10 percent to about 77 percent overall. These statistics provide hope for the family and child dealing with a diagnosis of cancer.

The board certified, pediatric hematologist-oncologists at the Jimmy Everest Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders in Children are specially trained to diagnose and treat children and teens with cancers such as:

  • - Bone tumors
  • - Brain and spinal cord tumors
  • - Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma
  • - Leukemias (acute and chronic)
  • - Carcinomas
  • - Head and neck cancer
  • - Kidney cancers
  • - Soft tissue sarcomas
  • - Cancer susceptibility syndromes

Comprehensive care includes access to state-of-the-art medical diagnosis and treatment in patient- and family-friendly facilities. Many of the treatment opportunities OU Children's Physicians provides are unavailable elsewhere in the state:

- The only pediatric stem cell transplantation team in the state.
- Access to Children's Oncology Group's cooperative trials, some of which are not available elsewhere in Oklahoma.
- Children's Oncology Group is the world's largest childhood cancer research organization.

The team of pediatric cancer specialists at the Jimmy Everest Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders in Children provides both the latest investigational therapies as well as conventional treatments. Especially important is the fact that this team specializes in treating cancer in children and teenagers. They consider the effects of chemotherapy, radiation and other therapies on a child's growing body, and make every effort to minimize any negative effects these treatments may have during important development years.
